Katie is in her first management position, in charge of a team of five. Recently, tension and disagreement among the co-workers having to do with lack of clarity around roles and responsibilities disrupted and delayed the project they’re working on. Seeking to understand the situation, Katie spoke with all involved parties, clarified the facts and everyone’s perceptions and perspectives. After considering all the information, she held a group discussion and presented a viable solution that all agreed to. She assigned each member precise responsibilities, and instituted a system of task lists with due dates to make sure that the team worked effectively. Remaining calm, discussing the issues openly and coming up with a positive solution that everyone agreed with and adhered to got the project back on track. Katie’s supervisor was impressed with the way she handled the situation and is recommending her for another position with more responsibility and increased remuneration.

Highlighting your winning strategies

If you want to be seen as an expert worthy of the ability to persuade and influence others, let people know how you achieved what you achieved. Sharing your strategy of how you got from point A to point B provides useful information for others to follow and contextualises your success.

When you decide that you want to be an expert in your field, you must formulate a plan and put it into practice. Becoming an expert doesn’t happen by chance. It requires thought and action. The simplest strategy for achieving success consists of three parts:

Where you are now: This part involves understanding as much about yourself as possible. Knowing how you think, behave and how you compare with others in your field gives you a reference point to work from. Be realistic, detached and critical when considering the causes and effects of your behaviour.

Where you want to be: Set your goals and determine your means of achieving them. Decide where you want to be in five or ten years and what you’re prepared to do to achieve that vision. Figure out where you’re going to focus your efforts and find out what others in your field are doing to achieve their expertise.

What you need to achieve your goals: Ask yourself what changes in your thinking or behaviour you may have to make in order to become an expert. Figure out the best way of implementing those changes and do it.

Showcasing your successes is tricky, so be careful. If you’re anything like me, you’ve received conflicting messages throughout your life about showing off your successes. On the one hand, you’re told not to hide your light under a bushel and, on the other hand, you’re told not to brag.

If you’re to become a successful persuader and influencer, you have to convince people that you’ve got the skills, wisdom and experience to guide them to goals that are in their best interest. They don’t know this information unless you make it your business to make it known. So let your customers, suppliers, employees and anyone
